Commvault Command CenterTM Concepts

The Commvault Command Center introduces simplified configuration and concepts. Configuration wizards allow to easily configure storage, deduplication, data protection, and agent deployment. For users that are familiar to the CommCell® Console, it is important to understand the differences of the Commvault Command Center concepts.

The Commvault Command Center uses a smaller set of components to configure the CommCell® environment, such as features, plans, and storage devices. These components are translated in all CommCell® Console required configurations which are libraries, global deduplication policies, storage policies copies, backup schedule policies, and auxiliary copies. Therefore, using the Commvault Command Center greatly simplifies the configuration and management of the CommCell® environment.

Commvault Command Center feature overview

Products and Features

The Commvault Command CenterTM is built on products and features that can be configured and added to the console. Several features are available to help protect different datasets, workloads and to analyze and manage your data. These features are grouped under three main products; Protect, Activate and Orchestrate.

  • Protect - Which is acquired through the Complete Backup & Recovery license, provides all the features required to protect physical and virtual servers, applications, NAS and cloud workloads.
  • Activate - This product enables an organization to analyze structured and unstructured data, and use the results to manage sensitive information and permissions.
  • Orchestrate - In preparation of disaster recovery, or simply to do maintenance on systems, it is possible to fully configure and automate replication, failover and failback for different workloads. Whether it is a file system, database or virtual machine, the orchestrate feature lets you create replication pairs from just a few clicks.

Protection Plan

The protection plan is the overall set of configurations required for protecting a server or an application. It is composed of the following entities:

  • RPO – The frequency at which the backups will be conducted. The system automatically translates RPO into schedule policies and backup job types in the CommCell® Console.
  • Storage – The storage device and its backup locations,  are translated as a library and its mount paths in the CommCell® Console.
  • Deduplication-Enabled Storage – Configures deduplication for a disk or cloud storage target. The deduplicated storage is translated into a global deduplication policy in the CommCell®.

During the configuration of a plan, a primary backup location must be selected. An option to add a secondary backup location is offered. This translates into storage policy copies and automatic auxiliary copy jobs in the CommCell® Console.

  • Retention – Defines how long the backup data must be retained. This translates in retention configuration on each storage policy copies in the CommCell® Console.
