Network Throttling

When network bandwidth is shared between users and CommCell® components, throttling rules are used to determine how much bandwidth is used for data protection jobs. Throttling rules are applied between any components. For example, a rule can be set to throttle clients from a remote site to use the entire WAN link bandwidth to send backups to the main site MediaAgent. Throttling rules can be set between a local MediaAgent and a remote site MediaAgent to control bandwidth usage during auxiliary copy jobs.




To configure a network throttling rule

1 - Expand Client Computers | Right-click the client | Properties.

2 - Click the Network button.

3 - Choose the computer with which communication is throttled.

4 - Click the Add button.

5 - Define days and time range during which the rule is enabled.

6 - Set an absolute or relative throttling rule.



Client Job Throttling

Backup job performance can be modified by setting job throttling options. The total number of concurrent jobs for a client can be throttled using the 'Enable Job Throttle at Client Level' option. This setting acts as a governor controlling the number of jobs that can run regardless of stream settings or number of subclients. Job throttling must first be enabled for the CommCell in Job Management settings applet and then configured in the 'Job Control' tab of the Client properties.


Job throttling is used to set the maximum number of concurrent data protection jobs and the number of log backups. There is an additional option to exclude jobs that run immediately from the job throttle. This governor value is applied to all agent types of a system. For instance, a client has a Windows File System agent and an SQL agent. It has five set as a maximum number of concurrent jobs. Four streams are launched by the Windows agent. Another four streams are then launched by the SQL agent. It results in three streams being queued which resumes when other streams complete.




To enable client job throttling

1 - From the Configuration menu | Click the Job Management tool.

2 - Enable the CommCell® to use client job throttling.



3 - Right-click the client | Properties.

4 - Click the Advanced button to define client properties.

5 - Enable job throttling for the client.

6 - Define the maximum concurrent data and database backup jobs.

7 - Define the maximum concurrent transaction log backup jobs.

8 - When maximum job limit is reached, the job will appear in queued state with a delay reason message.
